How to Overcome Your Fear of the Gym

The gym can be an intimidating place. But, it doesn’t have to be. Gyms might have had the negative connotation of being packed with massive bodybuilders, decked out in slick sports gear. However, most gyms are now welcoming to all levels. Don’t get stuck in the wrong mindset of you not belonging there. So go grab your sports gear and let’s tackle this fear right now with these helpful tips.

  1. What Motivates You?

The first step to overcome your fear is to ask yourself why you are there in the first place. If you find a strong reason why you are there, then it will be easier to keep going back to the gym. But, it also depends on what you are looking for. It also helps to have very clear goals in mind. Additionally, you want to figure out your motivation early on so that you can lay down a good foundation for your gym habit. You may realize early on that your motivations are perfect, can be improved on, or actually realize that maybe the gym isn’t for you. Whatever the case is, find the right method that works for your goals! Soon you’ll be the one in the sleek sports gear.

  1. Start/Think Small

If you are afraid of the gym, then it’s safe to say you try to avoid going any chance you get. Being ambitious probably won’t help you sway this feeling. Instead focus that ambition onto smaller feats. If you go in thinking about this big workout you have, chances are you will psyche yourself out. To counter this, try thinking smaller by only doing a small workout. Maybe only do one exercise. It may seem silly but remember you are trying to build up your comfort level so that you can do longer workouts.

  1. Take a Backseat

It might be easier to follow rather than lead in this instance. That way you could feel more inclined to hit the gym since you don’t have to worry about deciding what to do or anything. It removes that unnecessary stress. Here are three great examples: first you could go lift with a friend. If they already workout at the gym, that can be very helpful in getting comfortable with the gym. Remember, you are just trying to get used to working out at the gym. The second thing you could do is to hire a personal trainer. The great thing about them is that they will have a workout planned out for you and basically make sure you do everything properly. The final thing to try out is a group class. You will most likely find people at your ability level and at your comfort level.
